XP host/Ubuntu guest runs slow, no sound; spotty internet in host

I am very much interested in running Ubuntu as a guest system so I don't have to re-boot to access it. But running it (I am using VMware Player) slows my system down to an unusable crawl. In addition, I have no sound in Ubuntu, and my internet connection in XP (host) cuts in and out as I use the guest (it is very reliable by itself).

Where do I go from here? I perused the forums a bit, but didn't see anything directly relevant. Thanks.

What is the host OS?

What type of PC are you using? (Desktop or Laptop )

Give complete details about the hardware

How is your host connected to the internet? (Cable modem, DSL, Router...etc)

Please post the .vmx file from the virtual machine

#1. No audio in guest --> There is no audio adapter defined in the VM's configuration. Therefore the guest sees no audio hardware.

#2. Spotty performance. Host has 384 MB RAM. Guest is defined to use 256 MB RAM. This leaves only 128 MB RAM for the host to use for all its processes. Doesn't sound like enough to me. Best solution to many problems... Add more physical RAM in your host.

I guess I never found the RAM info. Thank you.

Is there a way to define the audio adapter for the guest?

Thank you for helping me along here.

Sure. You may want to peruse Ulli's site for vmx parameter information http://www.sanbarrow.com/. You may also wish, since you're on a Windows host, to use my VMX Builder application to edit your VM's settings (and create new ones). See my profile for website.
