Windows compatibility

I run a VMware Workstation Player on a Windows 10 PC.

The Player runs a VM also with Windows 10.

Shall the Windows 10 on the PC have a same or higher version than the one in the VM?

Example:

PC: 20H2 19042.1466

VM: 21H1 19043.1466

Will that work - or shall the VM also be 20H2 (or the PC 21H1)?

It works in the sense, that it runs. But is there a conflict lying ahead with this setup?

As long as the host OS is supported by VMware Workstation (which it is) there's no problem.

Host and guest OSes do not have to match – you can run Windows 11 in a VM running on Windows 10 for example.

About Windows 11 in a VM on a Windows 10 host: I once wanted to create a Windows 10 VM from with VM Workstation on a host running Windows 7. That was not possible. But maybe "creating" is different from "running".

As long as the VMWare version you're using supports Windows 10 VMs, it doesn't matter what your host OS is, even if it's Windows 7.
