Windows 7 access denied opening vmmon device

I am helping out with an issue while our desktop person is on vaca.  They have installed vmplayer 7.1.4 build-385536 on windows 7 PC's.  This in in a college lab where all machines are part of the domain and students login with domain credentials.  The machines are also in DeepFreeze.  The objective is to have a student use vmplayer create a VM so that they can perform all of their course work on this VM.   The issue is that upon doing this, the student is getting the following error;

Faulting application name: vmware-ufad.exe, version: 6.5.0.8870, time stamp: 0x4c6d9748

Faulting module name: MSVCR80.dll, version: 8.0.50727.4940, time stamp: 0x4ca2b271

Exception code: 0x40000015

Fault offset: 0x000046b4

Faulting process id: 0xd78

Faulting application start time: 0x01cccee35f926575

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Player\vmware-ufad.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4940_none_d08cc06a442b34fc\MSVCR80.dll

Report Id: acfa88a5-3ad6-11e1-990c-005056c00008

If I go into services, and try to start the VMAuth service, I get 'access denied opening vmmon device'.  I have tried setting up the service so that it is automatic (was manual) and I am using domain credentials that have been granted log on as a service rights on thsi workstation.  This didnt seem to do anything.

I have seen a lot about vmmon device in linux, but not Windows 7.  Im not sure how to get by this.

Any ideas ?  Has anyone seem/solved this ?

Thanks
