Windows 7 Host Networking Performance Very Slow

I installed VMware player 3.1 on a Windows 7 x64 host that has a dual core AMD processor and 8GB of RAM.

The thing that I noticed, before even trying to load a guest OS, was that my network speed on the host machine was extremely slow when trying to copy files from a NAS device compared with another Windows 7 machine on the same network. The PC with VMware on it was only transferring at about 200KB/sec while the other was at 10MB/sec.

I researched and troubleshot from a Windows problem perspective trying a number of networking related setting changes and tweaks to no avail. I even tried disabling the virtual network adapters that VMware installs. I then uninstalled the player and, viola, network speeds on that PC were back to normal.

I really want to try VMware on this PC but the network speed degradation on the host is a major issue. Are there configuration settings in VMware on the host that need to be tweaked? I would bet there is something that I am missing.

Thanks!
