Windows 10 in fullscreen on Workstation Player 12

I have installs of Win7 on WSP12 and they go fullscreen without issue.

I upgraded one of the Win7 installs to Win10, and when it completed, the desktop does not expand to the full screen size when I click the fullscreen icon on the WSP menubar at the top. I've tried playing around with resolution settings in Win10 and manually setting resolutions in WSP for that VM, but no joy so far.

How do I get fullscreen mode (with the whole desktop filling the screen) with Win10 under WSP12?

Hello,

With the info you have given us so far, I'd say thatit is most likely due to a broken VMware Tools install.

Do not try a repair install from within the Guest OS as it likely will not fix this.

In short follow these steps:

  • Uninstall VMware Tools
  • Reboot guest OS
  • Install VMware Tools
  • Reboot guest OS.

A bit of a longer description is:

  • In Windows, go to Control Panel -> Programs & Features -> Select VMware Tools -> Uninstall

Follow the steps from the installer to completely uninstall VMware Tools

  • Reboot the guest (==Windows 10)
  • Then from the Virtual Machine menu select "Install VMware Tools"

If no installer appears, go to the DVD-rom within windows and click "setup" (for 32 bits windows) or "setup64" (for 64 bits windows)

Once you see an installer, click "Next" until Finish, keep the defaults.

  • Reboot the guest when done installing (it will ask by itself to reboot)

Thank you for your reply.

I do not have VMWare Tools installed, just VMWare Player (v12.1.0)

Hi,

You need to have VMware Tools installed in the guest OS (Windows 10) in order to be able to do what you want.

So if that isn't installed in the Guest OS then that's the problem and you should install it.

I wasn't suggesting to uninstall VMware Player itself.

Thank you. I misunderstood, thinking VMWare Tools was part of the host OS, not the VM OS.

Did what you suggested and I now have fullscreen in Win10 in my VM. Thank you very much!!
