Vmware Tools update error "Could not find component on update server"

During the last days I tried several times for WinXP and Ubuntu guest OS under 64bit Win7 hostOS to update the Vmware Tools in guestOSs.

Whenever I click in Vmware player the menu "Virtual machine"->"Update VmwareTools" then a popup appears telling me:

Could not find component on update server. Contact Vmware Support or your system admin".

Hmm, whats that? Did Vmware abolished their update server?

How do I download VmwareTools for the various guestOSs manually?
