VMware player does not run after mounting virtual disk on ubuntu

Ok, fairly new to running VMware player.

I am trying to share folders and files with my ubuntu host.

I can mount the disk before running the virtual XP machine.

1.-What bugs me is that the thing always asks for the root password....any way or changing this??? where??

2.-After mounting the disk, VMware player can not run the virtual machine bacasue"failed to lock" the file that is part of the virtual hard drive (it is pre-allocated).

How can I fix this??? The only way I can see the XP files is by mounting the virtual drive WITHOUT RUNNING VM PLAYER.

3.-I do need to have the drive mounted while the XP machine is running....specialized software....

4.-I already erased the .lck files.....

DISK: Cannot open disk "/media/B271-05E8/WinXP_Pro/Windows XP Professional-0.vmdk": Failed to lock the file (16392).

Hi Martine12,

Welcome to the forums.

Which way are you trying to work: access Windows files from Ubuntu or the other way? Usual method is to access the files through the network, using Samba or NFS. What kind of software are you trying to run?

Franck

Both ways, why should it be unidirectional????.....Edit Virtual machine properties"->Hard disk->Utilities->mount disk

The software is hardcore microwave design tools......the latest version is just available on Windows...

If what you want is a common place to share your files, then you should use the Shared Folders feature or create a share on the host or in the guest and access it via the network from the other OS.

You won't be able to start the VM when its virtual disk is mounted inside the host as the player needs exclusive access to the vmdk.

Of course, file transfer is needed both ways. My question was about which OS was hosting the files and which one needed to access them. Sorry if I was not clear.

Regards

Franck

Mounting the disk and then use it in the VM is verboten.

I would use regular network shares via Samba
