hello all, I have seen this issue addressed previously but have still not been able to resolve this issue. I am using VMware Player version 1.0.3 build 34682 on a PIII 930mhz machine with 384MB of RAM. Here is my VMX file

I created a folder on my desktop with the contents of m XP Pro CD and then integrated it with all my updates, installers, etc and now instead of burning of course I want to use a virtual machine to test. I used a program called Folder2ISO to create that same folder into an ISO I labeled customxp.iso Now as far as I can tell I point the virutal Cd Rom drive to look for the file in C:\customxp.iso which is where it is at. however when I run my .vmx the virtual machine boots I get the error message "No bootable CD, floppy or hard disk was detected"
I also have the CD-ROm set to boot first in the BIOS of the virtual machine. Being my first attemp at setting up a virtual machine is there anyone who can clearly define my problem and how I can get this ISO to install on a VM. Is it something with my ISO maybe?
Is it something with my ISO maybe?
It's possible, if you could burn this ISO to a CD and verify that it boots from the host maybe helpful
The way you describe creating the ISO will definitely NOT create a bootable ISO. Check instead for help on Slipstreaming - various utilities out there will allow you to do it. You may want to check out autopatcher to be able to consolidate all the current patches in one place, as well.
Gentelmen, thank you for your responses, I greatly appreciate it. Please allow me to clarify. I have successfully slipstreamed updates into other CD's using the same method: copy contents of XP cd to hard drive, slipstream accordingly, burn as a bootable CD. However I am now trying out reg tweaks, and silent program installs but I know I am bound to make mistakes hence my desire to test with VMware Player. I am highly doubting my problem lies in the slipstreaming process but I suspect with a bootable ISO. The last CD I created (which did work with current windows updates slipstreamed into it) I used IBM Sonic software that allowed me to burn the folder onto CD and make it bootable but I wasn't able to burn the folder onto my hard drive as an ISO which is why I used the Folder2ISO program. So it seems to me that my ISO isn't bootable so I guess my question is clearer now, what do you I need to turn the folder on my desktop with my slipstreamed XP CD contents in it into a bootable ISO??
I've had great success with UltraISO. You can probably use other ISO creation tools as well... But here's a link to a thread on UltraISO's forum on how to compile slipstreamed Install CDs. http://forum.ezbsystems.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=530
Great wonderful thanks. I'll be back in the office Wednesday and give it another go and post back on my success.
Try adding the following line:
ide1:0.startConnected = "TRUE"
tocker, thank you for your suggestion but when I added that line and ran the VMware Player it said my configuration was corrupt. Either way I used UltraISO and followed the instructions from RDPetruska's link and created a bootable ISO successfully and now I'm on my way to testing my new custom XP disc!! Thanks for the help guys, all of you. I appreciate any and all insight. thanks again
whoops. Just wanted to clarify, looter211 is another handle I was using. I had some problems signing up. Thanks again all, I really appreciate the help.
>Is it something with my ISO maybe?
you can use magiciso to create iso file with files and folder. It works well for me.
