VMware Player 4.0.1 back to 3.1.5

Greetings,

due to issues with graphic display (direct 3d?) in VMware Player 4.0.1 I need to step back to VMware player 3.1.5.

What is the proper procedure to go back from 4.0.1 to 3.1.5 using the 4.0.1 disk.vmdk?

I tried to use a VMware Player 4.0.1 disk.vmdk with a  VMware Player 3.1.5 config.vmx.

The machine started, I removed the vmware tools and reinstalled the vmware 3.1.5 tools.

As much as I can see, it runs ok, but I'm not sure if this is a correct/proper approach for this issue.

Any hints would be very much appreciated.

I'm not aware of any changes to the .vmdk metadata escept for the "ddb.virtualHWVersion" in the header (either in a separate .vmdk file or embedded in the data .vmdk). Anyway, if the VM starts without complaints you should be fine. Otherwise you either need to patch the ddb.virtualHWVersion form "8" to "7" or use VMware Converter 5.0 to convert the VM.
