I have recently upgraded from the RC to the full version of vmplayer 3.0 but i am still having the problem of updating vmplayer 3.0 with the necessary vmtools.
Does anybody here encounter the same problem and hopefully there is a fix to my predicament.
Whenever i try to download all of the components of vmtools, its stuck at the window where its vmplayer is trying to connect to the update server.
This problem was also present in vmplayer 3 RC and i thought it would go away after upgrading it to the version 3 but it seems it hasnt.
Haha, lee kuen yew sure is a old fart, but i doubt they would block vmware update service. I am guessing theres some error which is preventing me from downloading the tools.
I guess i have to try win 7 on the same machine and see if it works or not.
Could someone who is experiencing this problem please try the 'Check for Updates' menu in Workstation/Player? If this works and the tools download doesn't work, there's something wrong. (They are two different subsystems of Workstation/Player) However, if both don't work, there is probably some kind of firewall stuff going on with Workstation.
Thanks for your help guys.
Yes, there is a problem. I can 'Check for Updates' without any problems but the Download Tools does not work. I even tried to shut off my firewall just to ensure it was holding back the program, no change.
litwin7, thanks. That's a good data point. Could you attach a log where you do the following:
1) Check for updates from the Help menu.
2) Power on a VM and attempt to download Tools. If it hangs there, let it sit there until it returns an error message. If it doesn't move after like 10-20 minutes, hit the cancel button, and quit Workstation/Player cleanly.
After this I'm going to personally try to reproduce this and see what happens.
Thanks.
By completing the steps you requested and letting it run over night the window remaing saying "Connection Status: Connecting..." Any ideas? When will the next release come out so i can get this thing working??
I just want to report that I'm having the same problem on Win7 32bit host + Win7 32bit guest. No proxy, I can access the XML in both IE and Firefox.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Start Player, go to Help, Check for updates. It says "No new VMware Player updates are available"
2) Go to File, Preferences, click Download All Components Now. I get "download pending on all". I cancel all of them.
3) I start up the Win7 VM which has been created by creating a new VM config and then mounting a VHD downloaded from Microsoft's website (it's a Win7 Enterprise Trial)
4) When the Win7 guest loads I get prompted for VMware Tools installation. I give a go ahead and get the same "pending" message again. Sometimes, it's not "pending" but "trying to connect" indefinitely.
Wait! This one last try I've seen a UAC prompt and the update actually worked!!
I'd recommend all others to try running the Player with admin privileges to see if it helps. Anyway, the indeterministic behavior certainly indicates there's something wrong.

Borek
I had this.
Permissions were the issue for me but I didnt get UAC popup in Win 7 host I only got lucky seeing this post.
VMWare people - fix this!!
It will be damaging your products perception.
Make the VMware Player give suitable information to the user so they can know what to do.
