VMplayer stuck at downloading extra components

I have recently upgraded from the RC to the full version of vmplayer 3.0 but i am still having the problem of updating vmplayer 3.0 with the necessary vmtools.

Does anybody here encounter the same problem and hopefully there is a fix to my predicament.

Whenever i try to download all of the components of vmtools, its stuck at the window where its vmplayer is trying to connect to the update server.

This problem was also present in vmplayer 3 RC and i thought it would go away after upgrading it to the version 3 but it seems it hasnt.

Do you use a HTTP proxy to access the web? Can you reach https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/index.xml from within Internet Explorer? If you can't, try and fix it to match e.g. your Firefox settings and try again. If not, and you do use a HTTP proxy, could you post some of that info here and possibly a screenshot of the proxy section of the Internet Options control panel? Thanks.

Thx for your help.

Just for your info, i am not using a proxy and i have checked IE's internet options and there is no proxy set up on my IE browser and the LAN settings that is within IE internet options is set to auto detect settings and thats about it. I have tied the website which you gave me and its an xml file isnt it? All i get is a load of xml code, am i to expect a readable website?

I dont suppose you guys know when a updated version of vmplayer would be out which may fix this problem of mine.

On another note, i have a laptop which was successful in installing and downloading the vm tools, only problem is the USB functions dont work.

Unfortunately, because we don't know the root cause of the error (the error basically indicates that we failed to "automatically detect settings"), I can't tell you when a fix will be out. However, you can work around the issue if indeed you know there is no proxy in between you and the Internet. Just uncheck "Automatically detect settings" and see if that works.

Nope, unchecking the "auto detect settings" did nothing. Its still refuses to download the vm tools. I guess i have to drop vmplayer 3 for virtualbox for the mean time until they release a newer version which hopefully fixes the bugs which are inherent to this copy.

Could you attach a new UI log from when 'automatically detect settings' was unchecked?

Sorry to hear it still isn't working.

Okay, last thing: any firewalls enabled (even the default Windows Firewall?) Try disabling that for a bit and see if it starts working. If that does it, add an exception. If not, I'm really lost.

if you install the full Workstation without license you have the same functionality like the free VMplayer 3 without the troubles

I've disabled my kaspersky firewall as well as the windows firewall and i still cant download the vm tools.

But i have to purchase vmware workstation, if not it would lock up since its only a 30 trial software compared to vmplayer which is totally free.

On another note, i just noticed that my processor doesnt support intel's virtualization optimization eventhough its a quad core.

Workstation does NOT lock up after 30 days - you can then use vmplayer which is part of the installation

Another thought - can you fire up Player and do Help -> Check for Updates on the Web? Is there an immediate result?

That update checker uses a different subsystem than the one you're having problems with, and if there is a firewall blocking traffic on a program by program basis, as is common on Windows, that update checker should not work either.

If you get an immediate result saying "No new VMware Player updates are available", then the update checker is working and so should our Tools download mechanism.

Finally, if you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, I would be willing to come assist you personally as we are very interested in ironing out the wrinkles with this feature (or conversely invite you to Palo Alto.) Alternatively, if you are willing to trust me, I could remote desktop or VNC into your machine to investigate for myself. This will help us make Workstation and Player better for everyone. Let me know what you think.

I'm having the same issue.

Go to Help > Check for updates

says no new VMPlayer updates are available.

Go to VM > Install VM Tools

Pops up a credentials box with the wrong proxy server and it is grayed out.

I use a PAC script to access the proxy. The Credentials box has part of it correct, but it changed the port to 80 and excludes the pac script.

I've tried changing which proxy option I use, but it doesn't change what shows up in the box.

Hello -

After reading all of the postings and tried all of the suggestions I am still not able to download the VMWare Tools.

Basically it trys to download from softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds (yes I can access it from IE & Firefox and no I dont have a proxy server) The"Connection Status:" remains with "Connecting" with zero network activity.

PLEASE HELP!

I am currently residing in singapore so i dont think it would be convenient for both of us to do a remote PC. Also, on another note, i noticed that after uninstalling vmplayer and installing workstation.

The problem still persist. I am at my wits end on trying to fix this problem. I will be waiting for my copy of windows 7 to arrive and to a fresh install of windows 7.

PS: I am currently running in win XP pro sp3.

Anyway, could you do the 'check for updates on the web' thing?

Sorry this is giving you such a tough time. Maybe Lee Kuan Yew is blocking the download...
