VMX corrupt file

I have Windows 7 on my PC, running VMWARE PLAYER version 6.0.1 build-1379776.  I can no longer start my session, as I keep getting "VMX file corrupt" error.

What does this error mean.  Can I reinstall VM player software, and will it find my data?

Please confirm.

Thanks

Gary

No reinstalling VMware Player will not fix this error.

If you attach the vmware.log file to a reply one of us will create a new one for you based on information in the vmware.log file.

Note: Use the "Use advanced editor" link in the upper right corner of the normal reply window to bring up the Advanced Editor where you'll be able to attach files via the Choose File button or Browse button (depending on the Browser) above the Post Message button!

Just saw this post after I replied to your post in the documents section. You will find a .vmx file that has been extracted from the provided vmware.log as well as a small batch script which takes the vmware.log as an argument to create the .vmx.

André, nice CMD Script! Smiley Wink

BTW... As written it does not work on pre version 8 of WS (or pre version 4 of VMP) vmware.log files.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread here, but I have the same situation and am having trouble getting the script to run.  All I get is "The system cannot find the path specified" when I run it from a command prompt within the directory where the corrupted .vmx is/was.  I played with the parameters in the file but no luck.  Mine got corrupted when the drive it was on ran out of space and caused the vm to crash (couldn't free space as it was literally the only thing on the drive.  I moved the entire directory to a larger drive, but after the crash, the .vmx file shows as being zero bytes in size, and I don't have a backup of this volume (I do have an old clone of it, but that was from 3-4 months ago.  Can someone correct my usage of this script or generate a .vmx for me?  Log attached...

... and am having trouble getting the script to run.

You simply need to call the script with the vmware.log file as an argument (or drag&drop) the vmware.log on the script.

Anyway, I attached the extracted .vmx file to this post.

The log file you posted unfortunately doesn't contain the required information to recreate the .vmx file. What's required are the vmware*.log files from the VM's folder.

It doesn't actually look like the .vmx file is corrupted, but more like a file locking issue. What you may try is to close VMware Workstation (or at leaast the VM's tab) and then delete all of the VM's files and sub-folders with a .lck extension.

If this doesn't solve the issue, please open a new discussion (because it seems to be a different topic), and provide some details like a full list of files in the VM's folder (the output of dir *.*) and attach the VM's configuration (.vmx) file.
