Unable to start vmplayer as any user other than root (Linux)

I am trying to evaluate vmplayer as an alternative to virtualbox for running Windows Server virtual machines.

After installing the linux bundle from root, I was able to run 'vmplayer' from root and go through the license/terms agreements and start the software for the first time.

However, upon switching to a standard user, the program starts initially, but then crashes after selecting the "free non-commercial use" option.

Here is a screenshot of vmplayer running after initially being invoked.

Once, I hit "Finsih" I get the following errors in the terminal and the program fails to load:

==== AUTHENTICATING FOR org.freedesktop.policykit.exec ====

Any ideas on what could be causing this? I'd prefer not to run any persistent software as root.
