Unable to install VMWARE Tools for guest Windows 3.1 (under MS DOS 6.22). I am using VMWARE Workstation player 17 which run under Windows 11.
- Guest Windows 3.1 is running
- on Host Player > Manage > Install VMware Tools is selected
- virtual CD/DVD drive is configured to autodetect a physical drive
- Under
drive I can see the VMWARE files for VMWARE tools.
- In Windows 3.1 under RUN command D:Setup.exe command is issued. After this I see some screens displayed for some seconds only and then and back to Windows 3.1 screen. Due to the fast screen displayed for some seconds only (max 3 seconds) I was not able to read the screen. I record the screens in a video and try to slow motion the video. I only see some screen with many small boxes displayed, some in black and white and some boxes in different colours. (please see attachments).
- Could it be that there is a problem with the svga drivers, which are not yet installed in Windows 3.1 / MS DOS 6.22? I tried to install the SVGA drivers in WIndows 3.1 but the most SVGA drivers I found were packaged as flp fliles. When I tried to install these drivers and allocate the flp file to the floppy drive I can not boot the guest and an error message is issued: "NTDLR is missing
Press any key to restart".
- Since VMWARE Tools is not yet instaled I do not have file sharing with the host and it is dificult to find a way to install the SVGA drivers.
- Any suggestions will be appreciated, Thank you.
First of all, there ARE (and never were) any VMware Tools for DOS and Windows 3.x.
There ARE drivers out there on the web for DOS and Windows 3.x for VMware virtual machines, but nothing official from VMware.
