Unable to expand vmware ubuntu diskspace, no disk on disk management?

Hi, so I've been running around in circles trying to figure out how to increase the space available on my Ubuntu 64-bit on Workstation (player) 12.0 virtual machine.

Essentially I followed this guide: (How to Increase Disk Space in VMware (with Pictures) - wikiHow  Method 1)

But when I get to step 6, there is no other disk other than disk 0.

After looking through a handful of articles and investigating what the problem could be, I think it could be related to the fact that my .vmdk is where older workstation locations usually are, and that my .vmdk is split up in a way I don't understand, so I am unable to map it to a virtual disk and see the partitioned disk that would allow me to expand the volume. However, I am very ignorant about all of this, despite having spent hours reading. Does anyone know how I could finish expanding my disk space for use on the Ubuntu virtual machine?
