I want to install VMware Player or VMware Workstation Player on an Ubuntu 15.10 box.

What version should I use?

Reading in Ubuntu forums I see that there are several pre-installation and post-installation activities changing based on the VMware Player and Ubuntu version.

Where an I locate a detailed descriptio onf the installation procedure for Ubuntu 15.10?

Hello,

VMware Player is nowadays called the VMware Workstation Player, so it basically is the same system.

The most logical version to start with is to use VMware's latest version of VMware Workstation Player.

That version should have the best support for Ubuntu 15.10.
