Trouble Re-Installing VMware Player

Hi,

Had been using VMware Player quite happily for several months then yesterday for some reason it failed to start (Win 7 PC with Win XP virual machine).

I uninstalled Player and down loaded latest version of Player (4.0.4) to re-install. When I try to run the install exe as administrator, I get the usual 'Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer', I select 'Yes' but then nothing happens, it appears the exe fails to run. There are no mesages displayed.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

Do you run the setup via right click "Run as administrator"?

Yeah, sorry for the double entry, still getting the hang of the forum ☺

Do you have any suggestions or ideas how to proceed?

Thanks

I would:

Check the Windows log files for entries.

Clean up the Program Files directory from all VMware Player stuff, except the virzual machines (which should be stored somewhere else anyway).

If that doesn't do it, try an older version.

When I tried to run the exe again the only Window log updated was ‘System’ which did show any errors or warnings.

I have tried installing v4.0.3 but with the same effect.

I did remove all VMware stuff from Program Files before attempting the install.

I’ll down load try v3 and let you know what happens.

Eventually down loaded v 3.1.6.

Went to run exe and got the following message (see attachment)

Haven't pressed anything yet since getting this

I think during the uninstallation windows may be properly removed the registry entries or the program itself may not be fully removed

use free revouninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

and ccleaner to clean the registry http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER

and remove the temp files etc, then reboot and run it as administrator, Use the latest one of vmware player.

Please don't forget to award point for 'Correct' or 'Helpful', if you found the comment useful. (vExpert, VCP-Cloud. VCAP5-DCD, VCP4, VCP5, MCSE, MCITP)

IMO The best way to cleanup a failed install/uninstall is to follow the VMware KB: Cleaning up after an incomplete deinstallation on a Windows host (1308)

You can use information in How to add, modify, or delete registry subkeys and values by using a registration entries (.reg) fil... to create a .reg file to safely remove the block of keys shown in the article.

Link to .reg file I've posted in the past for VMware Player: Cleanup_VMware_Player_Windows_Registry_Entries.reg.zip

Hi GK & WoodyZ,

Thanks for your suggestions. I've tried everything you both mention but still get the Program Compatibility Assistant dialog Smiley Sad

I'm going to call in the IT man today to check over my PC. I'll come back here later if he doesn't find anything.

In the meantime f you have any more suggestions then please let me know.

Thnaks again
