Tribes: Ascend graphical issues

From what I've read Unreal Engine 3 games have performance problems, but should render correctly.  When I enter Tribes: Ascend in vmware windows 7 the landscape is covered with little red dots, seems like something amiss with the shaders.  Is there any known solution?  Valve games all work nearly perfectly (small issues with displaying medium healthpacks).  Super Monday Night Combat (another UE3 game) works near perfect as well, the "red dot" issue appears in the menus, but not in-game, and the performance is quite playable whereas Tribes: Ascend runs very slowly.

I know it's a goal to iron out these issues, and thought that perhaps these specifics on two (free) UE3 engine games might help narrow the problems down.  (and if there's any known workaround that would be awesome :smileysilly:)
