Storage in VMWare Player

Hi all,

I'm new to VMware player, and I have a question about the storage locations.

I have VMware Player 2.5.1, and it runs a Linux virtual machine on my Windows XP PC. I noticed that when I create a file in the Linux VM, I can't search for the file in Windows. So I'm wondering how and where are the files stored on Linux. I thought the files are all on the same physical hard-disk? So I guess files created in the Linux VM is inaccessible to Windows, and vice versa?

Thank you.

You will not see that file from the host as it is located on a virtual hard disk (inside the .vmdk). If you want to exchange files between the two systems there are a few options (think of it like 2 different computers).

- If vmware tools is installed in the guest, then you can set up a shared folder in the host.

- Connect to a network share, either guest-to-host or host-to-guest.

- Store the files on an attached usb disk (most easily done if fat32 formatted).

- Mount the vmdk directly from the host with vdk. You will need a linux file system driver for windows, like ext2fs. Be sure the virtual machine is NOTrunning when doing this.
