Simple Network help - bridged mode?

Hi all

Very new to all this virtualisation stuff.

I am testing an application (PBX in a Flash - CentOS) in VMPlayer 3. I originally set up the network adapter to be using NAT and it worked fine for CentOS to get to the internet for an update. (Had previously tested on an old PC with no problems at all with the network).

What I need to do is let the appliance have its own IP address within my subnet and have it accessible as its own self (like it was installed on a normal PC). To do this I assumed that bridged mode would be the answer.

I set the IP address in the guest OS and can only sometimes get access to it (via the browser on the host PC), but more often than not, it is not accessible.

What have I done wrong? What should I be doing? What is the best way to achieve this?

Once tested and I am happy with the VM I will move it to my home server and have it running there where all the PC's and Voip phones will need access to it.

what is your host OS ?

how many Nics do you have in the host ?

any firewalls involved on the host ?

It is Windows XP, single NIC.

I have tried with both the windows firewall on and off.

Thanks

look inthe VMplayer installation directory - do you have a file named vmnetcfg.exe ?

If not run vmplayer-setup with parameter /e .\vmplayer3

This will extract the setup-files - find network.can and open it - extract the file vmnetcfg.exe and copy it into the install-directory.

Then run it - check vmnet0 settings - assign the physical nic and disbale "automatic bridging"

That hopefully fixes your issues

Thanks mate

I have changed to Workstation now, but I assume the concepts are exactly the same.

I have attached a screen shot. I have set VMnet0 to bridged and bridged it to the NIC.

In the guest, I have selected Custom: Specific virtual network and used VMNet0 (Bridged) instead of Bridged

Does that look right compared to what you have indicated.

Yeah, it is still hit and miss. I can get the web page for admin some of the time, and then other times it just times out.

I am going to try a completely different guest (both a XP and a Ubuntu guest) and see if it is just CentOS playing some sort of game with me.

Thanks for the help

Mick
