Signs like :?`/( come out differently in VMWare

How can I get the signs like :?/( to come out correctly inside of VMWare?

Host machine: Lenovo laptop with Nordic keyboard (Includes ÆØÅ). VMWare Workstation 17 Player (because i am running Ubuntu there). I see the problem when using unside Ubuntu, in the text editor and in VIM (the popular Linux text editor).

Problem: Inside of VMWare, signs like  :?/( come out differently. Where can I set this in VMWare, and how do I pick exacly the right keyboard?

(I am currently just practicing Ubuntu inside of VMWare, but also for long periods I used a professional license).

When you installed the guest OS, did you select the proper keyboard during setup?

Probably not. Should I re-install?

Depending on the OS, you may be able to change the codepage, keyboard, etc.  There are ways to map keys through to the guest, but I can't remember how/where to change those as all of my VMs match my host locale.

I have a similar problem.

Host is Debian (English with Swedish keyboard)

Does not matter which vm guest I am using. I have windows 10 and a deb vm.

Copy from host from pass (a password safe) and past it to guest - character changes.

Come around is to:

Copy from host from pass, past it in host Firefox, copy from host Firefox and then past it to guest - character is not changed!?

Copy host text from Firefox and past it to guest - character is not changed!?

So, my problem is that some program (Firefox) are using the same character settings (somewhere) as the guest VM does and pass and also password safe use some different character settings...?

If someone have any idea, thanks!

I assume you meant reinstall the Ubuntu guest OS. If you chose "Install the operating system later" instead of "easy install", normally the Ubuntu ISO installation will ask for keyboard layout.

Anyway, you should be able to add keyboard layouts within Ubuntu even after it is installed. Go to Settings -> Keyboard and click on the "+" under Input sources to add the keyboard layout that you want. You may have to scroll down the English sources and choose "Other" so that you can type in the language of your choice.

(Attached is a screenshot with example search for Norwegian).

AFAIK, special mapping for VMware Workstation/Player is needed only if you are accessing the VM guest OS via VNC. If you are accessing the VM using the regular user interface; it should be the guest OS keyboard layout that should be handling it.
