Running WinXP under a minimal Vista

My wife's got a laptop that came with Vista pre-installed. She has hated it since day one, but since HPQ doesn't provide XP drivers for that particular model, downgrading isn't an option. I'd like to set things up so that the Vista boots with a minimal footprint, and then starts up Player running an XP image. Does anyone have any suggestions before I start? Has anyone done anything like this before? Thanks for any help!

Since vmware player runs fine on VistaPE (the PE environment of vista) it sure can run on a slimmed down version of vista. You could probably disable or unistall over half of the running services on the host, but it's always at a compromise against the security..
