Proxy settings (installation/ update VMware Tools)

Hello,

after upgrading to vmware player 3 for Linux, I have the problem that the vmware tools cannot be updated. I have found out that the vmware player tries to establish a network connection using a proxy server. The strange thing is that this proxy server was used when I was on another institute. Now I have direct Internet access and I cannot use this old proxy server anymore. More strange is that I could not find nowhere any settings using this old proxy server. I have scanned the entire harddrive for the name of this proxy server, and I have only found one place: the vmdk file.

Here the snippet from the player.log:

Nov 16 10:22:47.943: player| CDS: Fetching repository index from https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/index.xml

Nov 16 10:22:47.944: player| CDS: Using HTTP proxy proxyXXXXXXXXXXX.de:80 for https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/index.xml.

Nov 16 10:22:47.945: player| Update check succeeded. No updates needed.

Nov 16 10:22:47.946: player| Cmd /host2/#_client/util/file/cmd/##96/op/stat/ failed: Invalid path

I have tried to add some lines in .vmware/preferences, e.g. using pref.downloadProxy="", but the problem is that I don't have a proxy server I could add here. Is there an option to explicitely state that a proxy server should not be used? Where vmware player finds the name of the old proxy server?

I use vmware player to virtualise a MS Windows OS. There I don't use a proxy connection and itInternet Explorer etc. works well.

Thanks for your hints!

Hi,

It is most likely picking up the proxy settings from internet explorer.

Go to: Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings

There's a checkbox for proxy settings down there, if it is not checked, then it should be good.

However I would temporarily check it and verify there's nothing set under the advanced button down there as well.

Then make sure it is not checked after clearing any details out of there.

Hope this helps,

This was also my idea when I was looking for the reason why this old proxy server was used. But in the settings of the IE the proxy is disabled (the proxy server is even not given there!).

thus, this was not the solution. But thanks for your quick reply!

OK, go have a look at this message then

It is for workstation, but there might be a similar setting in Player.

Thanks for your suggestion.

The post you mentioned says:

Do you use a proxy server? If so, could you try going to Control Panel

> Network and Internet > Internet Options > Connections >

LAN Settings and either:

A. Unchecking "Automatically detect settings"

B. Explicitly specifying a proxy server manually

?

Or try running Workstation and going to Edit > Preferences >

Updates and unchecking "Check for new software components as needed".

(1) My host system does not use a proxy.

(2) I tried the "Edit > Preferences > Updates ..." solution already last week and it did not solve the problem.
