Poor performance when installed on Fedora 16 kernels

I have experienced poor performance when using a Windows XP VM running on VMware Player on an AMD-V dual processor laptop.  The current Linux  kernel I am using is that of Fedora 16, 2.6.40.8-2.fc15.x86_64.  In fact, the Fedora kernels for 13 and 14 offerred better performance.  Fedora 15 seemed OK until around the 2.6.40.* kernel release.

The kernel does not appear to distribute cpu time evenly so when scrolling in the VM the pane text stops, sputters and freezes.  This is very annoying and is simply unacceptable by today's standards.  I have submitted a bug report to RedHat but didn't get much help.

Anyone experienced something similar?  Can you recommend any configuration tweaks?
