I had the latest version (1.03) of VMware Player loaded on my laptop at work. My laptop connects to my Windows domain and obtains an IP address via DHCP.
I've only recently installed it (this week) and upped one Appliance.

This morning PCs in our building were obtaining a DHCP lease from a 192.168.81.254 address, which had a mac address of a VMware adapter. We found that by stopping the VMware DHCP service on my laptop, computers on the network could release/renew and get the correct IP from our Windows domain controller.
How is it possible that the DHCP service installed by VMware Player would override out domain controller's DCHP service?

If you used your OS and bridged your physical NIC with one of the VMware NICs, this can happen.

It does not override, it offers DHCP service in parallel to legitimate one. You could setup Windows 2003 server on a laptop, configure DHCP service on it, plug to your network and have the same effect. Or have XP laptop and freeware DHCP utility on it and do the same damage.
Makes sense. I think bridging wasn't working for my hosted appliance and I probably bridged to my physical NIC in Windows.
Thanks for the quick replies.
