I've been using VMware player to run a Windows XP Pro VM that I
originally created using qemu to build the VMDK and then I restored a
backup image of an actual production computer's Windows XP Pro boot
partition (made with Partimage, I believe). This has all worked pretty
well (after some initial hiccups) for some time.
Lately, I've been noticing that when doing certain activities (possibly all
activities) such as run a compile of a SQL script to a remote server
(from inside the XP VM) from the command line that normally might take
20 - 30s that the compilation will drag and slow down a lot. All I
have to do (I just happened to notice this randomly, but it's
definitely reproduceable) is move my mouse (and continue to do so) when
the computer gets in this state and then it seems to run at full speed.
I'm running VMplayer (2.02 build-59824) on Ubuntu Gutsy. I believe it's
also the case that this doesn't always seem to happen, but perhaps it
only gets going after long periods of using the VM or compiling many
SQL scripts, etc.
I've run out of ideas on where to go on this. Most Google searches I do turn up people talking about their mouse
itself moving slowly, and that's not what's happening. The screen
updates always seem to move at a decent speed.
Any ideas?
