Number of cores in VMWare Player 16?

Hey guys,

I have a HP Z840 Workstation with 2 Xeon CPUs, each with 24 cores (48 total), I installed VMWare Workstation Player to it, created a new VM, but when I was going to configure how many cores for it to use, it only showed me 32 is the max and I was wondering why if the CPUs can handle up to 48?

Is there a reason for that?

Thanks.

Hi,

You're just hitting the configuration maximum for a virtual machine on VMware's hosted platform.

For example here is the documentation for Workstation Pro.
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/16.0/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-3140DF1F-A105-4E...

snippet (emphasis mine):

Number of processors and Number of cores per processor

Select the number of processors and the number of cores per processor.

Workstation Pro supports up to 16-way virtual Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) for guest operating systems running on multiprocessor host machines. You can assign processors and cores per processor to a virtual machine on any host machine that has at least two logical processors.
