No sound in guest Mepis 6.0 sound ok in WinXPhost

I have a Emachines T6420 64bit AMD running WinXPmedia Center as a Host

and VMplayer running a XXX.vmx which is the Mepis6.0 distro, I have tried other distros Freespire and Ubuntu and all end with no sound, however I am hearing the bootup sound in Mepis but fail to get sound from a CD that I play in the CDrom. I added

sound.virtualDev = "es1371"

sound.fileName = "-1"

sound.autodetect = "TRUE"

however when added I am unable to run the .vmx file it complains it is corrupt and i have to remove it to get it to run again. It already has

sound.present = "TRUE"

sound.fileName = "Creative Sound Blaster PCI"

I am running VMplayer 1.03 build 34682

with Mepis 6 2.6.15-26-386 #1

my soundblaster driver is 5.1.2600.2180 (XPSP_sp2_rtm 040803-2158

Now if i drop back to the Host and use Real Player I can play the CD even while the VM machine is running.

There were underlying issues with this system and were not discovered initially something going on

after a crash of a VM while trying to discover cause of no sound, I think it was when I tried to disconnect and reconnect the USB icon I got a message to do a reset and when I did it crashed

and a bunch of error messages flashed by (didn't have a chance to record them) the final result was that I had to reinstall WindowsXP media center
