Hey all, I installed Ubuntu on a VM with VMware player and while I can get on the internet with Firefox in Ubuntu I cannot get it to update or download any software using the software center. If anyone has experience in this area please share you knowledge. So far I have tried NAT and Bridged mode in the VM config but it makes not difference. Ubuntu starts to update but puckers out half way through stating all the resources from as certain point on could not be reached. I've tried Ubuntu 10.10 32bit and 10.4 64bit bot exhibiting the same issue. Never have this problem on my network running Ubuntu without a VM. Help please if you can. Thanks.
Have you made sure the source list is up-to-date like hitting the Reload button in Synaptic or use the sudo apt-get update command in a Terminal?
Yes, tried both of these. Pressing reload in 'software sources' yields

I am connected to the internet in my Ubuntu VM and typing this to you using firefox so the internet works partially. Just can't get the updates or anything through the Ubuntu Software Center. Any idea. I read a post were someone said they fixed the problem by setting the network driver for Intel pro 1000 or somthing like that but I don't know how to do that. I also had 2 vmware modules under network devices in my control panel one being VMnet 1 and VMnet 2. Someone also suggetsted setting up a static IP for the VMnet 1 in a thread I read but I don't see any way to set an IP for this. I have however set up my network connection in Ubuntu for a static IP but this didn't solve the problem either. All the while I have internet access but seems like whenever I try to move something either large or possibly from a secure source I am having problems. That being said I can get on my yahoo mail which has a secure login just fine. Turned off my software firewall and set both the host and the guest IPs to always allow outgoing traffic in my hardware firewall. I don't think the firewall is the problem as my other Linux machines some of which are running Ubuntu never have a problem updating on my home network.
Hold the phone! I might be onto something here. I was just in my VM Ubuntu and went to the Ubuntu site. I when to download the 32bit version of 10.04 and got this error message
The requested URL /ubuntu-iso//lucid/ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso was not found on this server.
OK so this got me thinking and I went into my Smoothwall 'hardware firewall' setup page and disabled my Dansgardian web filter which is using Squid proxy and disabled it. Tried the Ubuntu 10.04 download again and it worked.
So I went into terminal and did a sudo apt-get update and it actually worked. So apparently the guest OS is having an issue with the proxy that the host OS is not. There is nothing special I have to do to get the host machine or any other machine on my network working on the proxy so I don't know exactly why the guest OS would have a problem. The only thing I can think of right now is that the proxy is detecting some funny business going on on the green side of my firewall with the IP spoofing or whatever you call it and blocking it. I have run the VM in NAT and bridged mode and the proxy was blocking both. Any idea what I might need to look at in my Squid IPtables to permit the VM data transfers without having to stop my proxy every time I want to update or download something in VMware?
I'm looking through this thread now to see if I can find a solution but please chime in if you have one.
