Mint 18 Workstation Player 14 no guest OS when VM is on a drive other than the root

When I try to install the guest OS on a VM that I created on a second internal hard drive, it copies all of the files, but then freezes at 35% of the installation.  It gives the error that it can no longer connect to the drive--if this is a removable drive check the connection.  It's not removable, it's an internal SATA drive mounted under the /mnt folder.  I have no problem if I use the main drive--the one VMWare is installed on, only on secondary drives.  Any ideas? The target guest OS is Windows Server 2012 R2 standard.  There's plenty of room on the drive ~2TB, and I have 16 GB of RAM.

Hi,

That sounds very much like a hardware error.

In other words, your second drive is dying.

Can you copy large files (>2GB) on to that drive?

Have you tried running smartmon tools? (eg. smartctl -a /dev/sdb )
