Installing VMware tool on winXP 32 bits

Hi,

I have just installed VMWare Workstation Player 16 to run my WinXP (32bits) for some legacy software.

    I tried the following:

    a) Accessing the internet directly. I do a bridging, and also NAT, but the client still cannot connect to the internet.
    b) I downloaded the VMWare Tool 11 disk image, and mounted on the CD Drive. I can see the CD, but the setup cannot proceed as the image is created for 64bit windows, not 32 bit.
    c) I downloaded the 32bit tool and copy the exe file onto a thumb drive. I am able to see the thumb drive at the VM console, but the WINXP did not display the thumb drive in the windows explorer.

Please advise how shall I proceed so that the WinXP can read and write files on the host system.

Regards.

Try using this version with method B: https://packages.vmware.com/tools/releases/latest/windows/x86/

Thanks.

I have downloaded the the file. The issue with this file is that the client is not displaying the thumb drive, so I have no way of installing it.

I extracted the file, created a ISO image, and finally, I am able to see the exe file in the client.

However, when I clicked on the file, it tells me that it is not a valid win32 application.

I am lost again.

The last version of VMware Tools that supports Windows XP guest OS is 10.0.12. Version 10.1.x and newer does not support legacy guest OS such as XP.

You need to use the winPreVista.iso.

You don't need VMware Tools for this to work.

Not sure what the problem is, but try only NAT, in order to avoid confusion and for Host access this is the simple way. Check your address space with "ipconfig /all" - it has to be the same as NAT networking address space. Please make a note that while ping might work, tcp/ip doesn't really work for all services if you don't boot the Windows computer (talking about client now). If your addresses are somehow wrong, change them manually. Please observe that also Gateway must be correct if you require Internet access. It kind of sounds that you don't automatically get correct addresses to your client or shuffling between NAT and Bridged may have caused confusion or proper reboots have not been done between trials. ... or the testing has been wrong: Your host access might have been OK, but Internet doesn't work because Gateway address is wrong.

If it doesn't work, check that Host computer doesn't block anything - disable all Firewalls or something and reboot to verify that they are shut. When you get it to work, open Firewalls and configure properly.

For filesharing, you don't necessarily need any of this. Just drag and drop between host and client - it works well with GB-class files - the write speed of the disk(s) is the main limiting factor. If you need an UNC-share for some application, of course then you need to get the networking to work. Basically, this is a networking problem, not really anything VMware specific - if that helps to analyze the situation.

... of course you need to verify first that your client Ethernet card is working ... if it isn't you obviously cannot configure anything manually.
