Install Tools Offline

Hi,

Been searching everywhere for an answer to this but can't find one, can't believe I'm the only person with this problem.Either that or I've missed something!

I've installed VMWare Player 3 on a machine that has no internet connect. I try to install vmware tools but of course it fails because it can't connect to the web.

Is there an offline download available somewhere?

simply copy the iso-files from another host to the machine

you need this iso-files:

freebsd.iso

linux.iso

netware.iso

solaris.iso

windows.iso

winPre2k.iso

or skip the ones you will not need

you miss the point of the original question. I have a machine with no internet connection. I install vmware player. it doesn't have vmware tools anywhere. I have 'another host', this also has no internet connction. I'm in the same boat as I was to start with. ie. no vmware tools.

No - I understood the problem ... you have two ways to skin the cat:

- install VMplayer on a host WITH network - then you can download the tools there and copy them to the machine without network

- or install Workstation-full without license - this then acts like the VMplayer but has the tools-iso files installed

The problem is that we're discussing skinning dogs, as it were. So, let's say you DON'T have a machine the is connected to the Internet that you can install VMPlayer on and that you didn't notice a big warning during the Player install

telling you to install Workstation and not bother with a license if you wanted to work offline. That takes us back to the OP's issue (mine as well).

When one has a VM guest that cannot connect to the internet, and one does not have a computer that has an Internet connection on which one can install Player, and one has no desire to uninstall yet another version of Player only to install Workstation and not license it, how does one go about update the VM Tools?

I know that this thread is pretty old. But as it is neither not fully answered nor closed, I take the liberty to propose another solution. In case it can help someone...

It seems possible to download any VMware tools' Iso file from the VMware web update server:

http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/

Navigate into the folders to find what you need according to your Player's version and your host OS. For example, you'll find different packages at the following addresses:

http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/3.1.1/282343/windows/packages/

http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/3.0.0/203739/windows/

http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/3.0.1/227600/linux

For Windows, you have to download the Tar file, untar it and run the Exe. The Iso file will be placed in the Player's application folder. Never tested but it should be the same for Linux.

Franck - that helps me big time! Thanks for posting this. I was unable to get to the tools due to Proxy issues and couldn't find the direct file path.

Just a comment for our Linux friends:

- download the tar file

- untar it, should give you a file with "component" extension

- "vmware-installer --install-component=xxx.component"

Thanks for this, it was the only chance for me to get tools installed.

For Windows users a short installation guide:

The packages are TAR, you need 7zip or WinRAR to open them. Inside you will find a .exe file, running it will create a virtual CD-Drive with the drive letter d:\ . On top of your VMWare window, under 'Virtual Machine'  you can then start the installation of Tools, or you start it directly from the virtual CD-Drive by running setup.exe for 32 Bit machines, or setup64.exe .

I have an isolated network with vmware and need vmware tools.  These servers where we have vmware installed are forbidden to connect to the network due to security policy (ergo the isolated network part).

So back to the legitimate question the original person had - how can someone download vmware tools when the system the installation of vmware is on is forbidden to connect to the internet?  I have spent a non-trivial amount of time looking at vmware.com and can not find vmware tools available for download (yet).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VMware Tools for VMware Player are not posted to be downloaded like VMware Player itself and that's why outside these forums you'll not see a download link/page for VMware Tools for VMware Player.  They are meant to be downloaded in the background by the VMware Player program and silently installed.  That said, over the last couple years I posted links and directions quite a few times because there have been several issue where even with Internet access available the VMware Player program has had issues downloading.  Also if you had actually read this entire thread you would have seen the links that someone else posted!

Installing VMware Tools ISO Images on Windows Host, download to Host and untar then execute.  This then silently installs the VMware Tools ISO Image into the VMware Player working directory.  Then if VMware Tools will not install normally in the VM then manually assign the target VMware Tools ISO Image to the CD/DVD of the VM and manually install.

For installing VMware Tools ISO Images on Linux Host see information in my reply Re: WS 7.1.4 - Unable to download VMware Tools/Update.  Then if VMware Tools will not install normally In the VM then manually assign the target VMware Tools ISO Image to the CD/DVD of the VM and manually  install.

I was searching for this just after I had class last night.

Our computers can never go to the internet due to our policies - I suspected it had to be downloaded via the computer it was on since it failed with some message about not being able to download directly from the website.
