Increasing numbers (~200) of duplicate VMware audio devices shown in Ubuntu 20.04 (host) Settings

Environment

Dell Precision 7510 Laptop
Ubuntu 20.04 5.8.0-48-generic #54~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP (all updates installed)
Desktop Environment: Gnome 3.36.8

VMware Workstation Player 16.1.0 build-17198959
Guest: Windows 10 (all updates installed)

Issue

With a (Windows 10) guest running, increasing numbers of duplicate VMware devices are shown in my Settings Sound panel. See a screenshot here. However, none of these are shown if "pactl list short modules" is run at the terminal.  After a few days, around 200 duplicates are listed, and the sound stops working. No audio output can then be heard on any physical audio device when using the Test function in Settings (a voice can no longer be heard when testing "front left", "front right", etc). No media players, like VLC, output any audio. If a youtube video is accessed, the error, "Audio renderer error. Please restart your computer" is shown in youtube player.

The application on the guest, which is triggering the sound, is using Microsoft's PlaySound function.

When the VMware guest is cleanly shut down, all the duplicates disappear and the audio functions properly again.

Does anyone have a fix for this, please?

Thanks in advance
