I have install VMWarePlayer, downloaded UBUNTU Server 12.0.4 and cannot get past the Ubuntu Login propmt

I haver read many of the posts on this issue of UBUNTU issuing a login prompt but everything I have tried including

userid root and password = root_passord  does not work.

Supposedly during the installation it is supposed to ask the installing person for a userid and a password but that never happened under VMWare Player

Where did you download Ubuntu Server from - is it an appliance?

Welcome to the Commuity,

did you use VMware Player's "Easy Install" feature (i.e. select the installation ISO/CD) for the installation? In this case you should have been asked for a user and password. Anyway, I'd suggest you install manually without using "Easy Install" which will offer you all available options from the OS itself.
