How do I upgrade Win2000 to Win XP?

I have a win 2000 install disk and a win XP upgrade disk. I've installed Win2000 and wish to upgrade it to XP. I have several problems:

The "OS Type" setting can't be changed from 2000 to XP

I can't change the boot order to boot off the XP CDROM - if I press F2 during startup it doesn't show the setup screen in the VM

I'm therefore unable to do the upgrade. Can anybody help?

why not - is the VM suspended or running when you try to change it ?

I would not change guestOS type before the upgrade is done.

Add

bios.bootDelay = "5000"

to the vmx-file then reaching the ESC or F2 screen is easier

Hi,

IIRC then you start the upgrade process from within Windows 2000, so attach your disk and have it auto-start.

You can only change the guest OS type when the virtual machine is shut down.

Your second problem can be tackled in a variety of ways, try hitting escape instead of F2 and you should get a boot menu where you can select the bios to change the bootorder.

Another solution would be to add a boot delay so that you have more time to hit the F2 or Escape key.

In order to do that you would edit the vmx file using a plain text editor such as notepad and add:

bios.bootDelay = "5000"

to add a delay of 5 seconds.

Hope this helps,

AFAIK you can also create a brand new VM.

Use XP as guestOS ,assign the XP-update-iso to IDE1:0 and the 2000-setup-iso to IDE1:1

If I remember right that should work as well
