Host-only network between VM and host

Hello

Sorry if annoying you. This might be a common question, but I promise that I tried hard but failed to find the answer on the web.

I have a Vista-VM running in VMware player, on a host running Windows XP. The VM has a static IP which I cannot change because some programs rely on it. Now I am trying to configure my VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 and my VMplayer such that I am able to ping the VM from the host.

Current settings:

VM:

DHCP: No

IPv4: 192.168.0.64

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.0.101

DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2

VMnet1 on host:

DHCP: No

IP address: 192.168.0.79

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: (none)

What am I doing wrong?

Thx, caillerbranche

Details:

VMware player version: 2.5.0 build-118166

Host OS: XP Pro 5.1.2600 SP 3

Guest OS: Vista Business SP 1

VMTools are installed.

The VM settings for the network adapter are "connected" and "Host-only".

Firewall on guest is turned off completely.

The VM has been moved from a Vista host in the company network (VMware workstation) to my laptop. The Laptop is NOT connected to the network (the "real" network adapter of it is disabled).

Are you able to ping host from the guest?

Are you able to even ping the gateway?

Those dns servers, are they from your company?

Hello Joakim

I was not able to ping the host from the guest, nor vice versa.

Pinging the gateway from the VM was not possible neither. This makes sense (see below). The DNS servers are from my company network. However I think these and the gateway are not relevant at all since they are only needed for resolving names and accessing the internet. I only want to achieve that host and VM can communicate with each other using their IP addresses.

The networks architecture looks roughly as follows:

  • Internet <----> Gateway 192.168.0.101 & DNS servers 192.168.0.1,2 of company network <------> 192.168.0.185/255.255.255.0 Primary interface of host (laptop)

  • VM (its primary interface 192.168.0.64/255.255.255.0) <---.. X .. --> VMnet1 interface 192.168.0.79/255.255.255.0 on laptop

Note that both interfaces of the host have the same IP range 192.168.0.0/24 because the VM originally stems from the company network. However I have DISABLED the primary host interface in order to avoid it from interfering with the VM<->Host network. Thus I needn't be able and won't be able to access gateway, DNS servers or the internet from my VM.

Thx, caillerbranche
