Same situation. I left my WinXP in VMPlayer running without touching then for 90 minutes (locking screen of host OS = also WinXP) and then sudenly realized that VM is not reachable but consuming one of my two CPU.

Finally I kill some threads with huge CS (via ProcessExplorer) and then I need to kill VMPLayer itself.

After new boot VM I reinstalled VMWare Tools (via Modify) but I have no idea about cause of freezing.

IIRC there was another post about this type of thing when the host went to sleep/hibernate with the VM running.

Best is to shut down the VM when you know you are going to let the host go into sleep/hibernate mode.

That is not my case, my host OS did not go to the sleep or hibernate status. And I had no bad experience when I did it by hands. But I do not put my host WinXP to hibernate status with my VM running quite often and I upgrade my VMPlayer to version 3.1.5 build-491717  ]from 3.0] recently so there could be some unwanted "progress".
