Getting Virtualized performance counters error whenever I attempt to start a VM for the second time

After a reboot, the first VM I start works fine with Virtualize CPU perfomance counters box checked, but if I shut down the VM and attempt to (re)start it or another machine, I get the error depicted in the image. Any idea on how to fix it without turning that option off? Here's relevant HW/SW info about my computer:

CPU: Intel Core i5-1135G7
RAM: 2x8GB 3200MHz
OS: Windows 10 Home Single Language 19044.1526
VMware Workstation Player 16.2.2 build 19200509

I had the exact same thing happen on my W11 Home, Intel i5-10400, VMware Workstation 17.5.0 system too. I had PMC enabled, installed Ubuntu as the operating system, even rebooted several times, and everything ran fine. Only once I moved the VM to a different folder and fixed the path to bring the VM back into inventory, did I start getting these PMC counter errors and the VM won't start. I checked the .vmx file and there aren't any hard-coded paths that I see. Is there some way to reset the performance counters?
