Dvd/rw identified as cdrom drive

I am running Player 7.1.2 S in OpenSuse 13.2 64-bit. I am running a virtual version of Windows XP SP3 inside player and XP insists on identifying the dvd/rw as a cdrom reader. The .vmx file lists the device type as ide0:0.deviceType = "cdrom-raw" so XP should see the device as a DVD burner. I am using the free version of Player so is this a limitation of the free product?

Player does not have any limitations with regard to passing through a host CD/DVD burner.

Can you try using a virtual SCSI CD/DVD drive instead of virtual IDE?

I have tried adding the drive as both a generic SCSI device and as a SCSI CD/DVD. XP identifies the SCSI controller as VMWare VMSCSI Controller v 2.0.3.0 and the device as a VMWare virtual CD-ROM device. The description in the .vmx file is:

scsi0:1.present = "TRUE"

scsi0:1.deviceType = "cdrom-raw"

scsi0:1.fileName = "/dev/sr0"

That all looks normal to me.
