Connecting "Flash Drive" to VMware Player ...

Hi all;

I am a student taking a MySQL course at a local JC, we use VMware Player from a portable HD.

At school (VMware player ver 4.x.x.x, W7 Pro) allows me to connect the FD to the VM just fine.

At home (VMware Player ver 5.0.1, W7 HP) it does not.

I can see the FD on the host, but not on the VM.

I checked Player>Removable Devices: ... nothing.

There's not even a place that would allow me to manually mount a FD.

More:  One of my fellow students is running the same version of VMware Player (5.0.1) on his laptop, and is able to see the FD ok too.

It just seems to be on my home computer.

?????????

Thanks,

Wayne

Are there any flags on the Hardware Tree in Windows Device Manager?

Are the any messages in Windows Event Viewer that might be relevant to the issue?

Is the Host using USB2 or USB3?

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling VMware Player?  Just asking, don't try it yet as there have been some reports of not being able to reinstall VMware Player 5 and VMware Workstation 9 unless Windows is reinstalled so this is not something to do until all other avenues have been looked at.

Shortly after I posted this issue, I think I figured it out.

The host computer is USB 3.0 and the Guest Linux Kernel only supports USB 2.0.

You have to go to Kernel 3.2 for USB 3.0 support.

The back panel on my computer is all USB 2.0, when I plug my FD into one of those ports, the VM see's it...

Not something I would have thought of off the top of my head.

Thanks,

Wayne

p.s., am off the see if I can get the Tools thing to work.
