Hello,
I have a Windows XP SP3 host OS and two virtual guest OSs - Linux and Windows 2K3. The two virtual machines can ping each other and they can ping the host OS. However, the host OS cannot ping neither guest OSs. The host machine is setup with a static IP and both guest OSs are set with a NAT connection and can access the internet. They were working fine just the other day. Anyone have any idea whats going on?
Thanks for your time.
You said that when you open the "Network Connections" you can see vmnet1 and vmnet8. Can you confirm TCP/IP is available and checked in the list of protocols for these adapters?
André
Welcome to the Community,
please provide the output of "ipconfig /all" for the host and the Windows XP 2K3 guest to see how the network is set up.
André
André,
Thanks for the welcome and the reply.
Here is the results for the host Windows XP machine:

The VMware Host Virtual Network adapters are missing in the XP (host) output. (vmnet8 = NAT, vmnet1 = Host_only)!?
Please take a look at the Windows event logs to see whether there is an issue with starting these networks. Do you have the "Virtual Network Editor" installed?
André
Hmm, you're right, I didnt notice that. But when I go to Network Connections, I see both VMnet1 and VMnet8 enabled.
Under Event Viewer, this is the only log I found: "VMware NAT Servicve"
Using configuration file: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\vmnetnat.conf.
IP address: 192.168.226.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
External IP address: 0.0.0.0
Device: vmnet8.
MAC address: 00:50:56:EB:0A:67.
Ignoring host MAC address: 00:50:56:C0:00:08.
I do have the VNE installed. Is there any kind of diagnostics or perhaps some configuration suggestions you can give me?
Thanks.
EDIT:
I also just tried re-installing and that did not fix it either.
That's strange!? Do you have a firewall or AV software installed which might block the vmnet adapters?
To get access the to Virtual Network Editor you need to extract the vmnetcfg.exe from the installation package.
From the VNE you could try to click the "Restore Defaults" buttons.
André
I had Comodo firewall but I uninstalled that as well as my AV. I see the VNE tool (I had downloaded that previously before) and I'll try restoring to defaults as well. If nothing else, I guess I will try to uninstall VMware Player completely and then reinstall. Will post results.
Thanks.
Well I have fully uninstalled and then reinstalled VMware Player and its still the same problem. I am out of ideas at this point. I guess I can try a different PC but it kind of sucks because these virtual machines are for a class so now I have to make sure to move all my tools and images correctly. I cant find anything else via these forums or general Google searches so it looks like I have hit a wall unless there are any other suggestions?
Thanks.

André
Just checked the settings and TCP/IP was not checked....in fact nothing was checked! I am able to ping both of them now. How strange because I just checked the settings from the newly installed Vmware Player on my Windows 7 machine and its the same exact thing. Isn't that suppose to be checked by default?
Anyway, I really appreciate your time and diligence on helping me solve this problem.
Thanks.
