Can't set CentOS 6 NIC MTU greater than 1500?

I have CentOS 6.2 running in VMware Player 4.0.1, and when I try to set the MTU of the virtual network adapter above 1500 I get an error.

Bring up interface eth0; RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument.

Regardless of VMware Tools installed or not, error occurs if MTU is greater than 1500.  MTU set to below 1500, works, but not above 1500.  Any one else see this issue?

At first I used e1000, default.  Then when that did not work, I installed VMware Tools, so  vmxnet, since this is VMware Player.  Same result with either, I can set the MTU to less than 1500, but never higher.
