Can't install VM tools in guest machine

I'm evaluating VMware Player and I stumbled upon a problem.

I can't install VMware Tools in the guest machine (Windows 8.1). When I try i get:

Software update internal client error (CDS_HTTP_INTERNAL_ERROR). Contact VMware Support or your system administrator

I'm running VMware 12.5.7 on Opensuse Leap 42.3 - and to install I needed a modified files as described here:

VMware WS 12.5.6 fails to compile on openSUSE Leap 42.3 with kernel 4.4.68-2-default

VMware 14 is sadly not an option - I get identical error to the one described:

Any suggestions how can I get a successful install?

I have the same host machine, openSuse 42.3

For me, the soluction was:

Enter in Yast and stop the Firewall

Open the terminal and start the vmplayer like root

Open the Virtual Machine Guest

Download the vmtools,

Power off the vmware player and restart the firewall.

In my case, the problem stopped and I downloaded the vm tools

that didn't change a thing on my end.

But I've been able to install tools manually - by downloading the iso from here :

Index of /45848/tools/esx/latest/windows/x64

then mounting the iso in VM and installing from there. Atm I'm checking whether everything works as it should.
