Hi all, very new to virtualisation, have a server which is currently looking to replace and buy a new one, the server is a single processor and has about 4gb ram, nothing major but would like to put esxi 3.5/4.0 on it and import the server as a virtual machine and run it like that, no vmotion, no ha, no drs, just a single virtual machine, might put a second virtual machine on it in the future, but that is way down the line.
My question is I have been looking at the hardware compatability documents and the server is Dell Power Edge 2850, it says it is compatible but only with certain processors, does this mean the VMotion, HA,DRS wont work or VMWare will not work at all?
I am confused as to what is compatable and what isnt and which service is compatable, also can I do this free of charge or do I need licensing?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am new to this and getting varied responses from my current third party support, so thought I would go to the source?!
