I am having a problem connecting to ESX 3.5 U 5 with PowerCLI 4.1.1
I issue the command ConnectVIServer –Server <ESX IP Addy>
Once that is done the a GUI prompt shows for user name and password I use root for the user name and a password that is 14 characters and complex. Once that is done I look into my SSH connection and I see in the /var/log/messages file that the authentication succeeded from the loopback IP and for the user root. Immediately afterwards the PowerCLI loses the connection to the server. I have tried everything to resolve this issue and still can’t. I have created a debug file and will upload the last 25 lines as I think that has the most information. If you need the remaining parts of the output I can submit them later once I get to work in the morning.
I also read another post of suing a variable $Pass to possibly resolve the special character problem. I have not tried this since I am not at work and I did not know if my problem was the same as the other poster. I use the root account and password for my SSH and VIC and do not have any problems

Thanks for any help provided
Hi,
welcome to the VMware Communities.
I have no problem connecting directly to ESX 3.5U5 servers from PowerCLI 4.1U1. The only difference I see is that my complex password is 13 characters long. Do you have the same problem when connecting to a vCenter Server?
Regards, Robert
I am still a little new to VMware. We only have VMware Virtual Server not the vCenter Server. To answer your original question no I have not tried and I am not sure how to do this any direction would be great? Also can I do this with VMware Virtual Server or is it version dependent?
There are some other things you can test. You can connect to the ESX server web interface using https://ESXserverName/ and then try to "Log in to Web Access" Or you can download the VMware Infrastructure Client from the webpage "Download VMware Infrastructure Client" link and try to connect using the VMware Infrastructure Client. If you download the VMware Infrastructure Client from the webpage, you will have the correct version.
Hi,
can you provide more information? What happens when you call Get-VM or Get-VMHost. What is the exact error?
Thanks,
Vitali
PowerCLI team
I can login through the webpage to the ESX server without a problem from internet explorer.
As for using other commands I was not aware that you can run other commands without being connected to the ESX server. I will test these tommorow as I am not on location to do so. Thanks for the help once again
sorry after redreading your post I can answer it . My VIC does work and I have the version from my ESX server webpage installed on my client. I have not had problems connecting to the ESX server with the user name I used for the PowerCLI connection only PowerCLI is giving me the errors
Thank you for this. I was connected all a long. When it drops back down to the c:\program files\VMware\Infrastructure\vSphere PowerCLI> I thought I was getting disconnected. I thought the line would change like in a Unix terminal.
Is there a way to maybe added a connected status to this once connected?
