I have a senario where we have a VM with a vmdk ( OD disk) and also an RDM(data disk ) attached..

I need to right a script to hot clone the virtual machine and if possible . I howeverr dont raelly want to clone the RDM attached to it...just the vmsk ( OS Lun)

Tricky!!!!!!

Is the following a viable option ?

1) clone the VM

2) remove the RDM hard disk from the cloned VM

For point 2) you could consider the function remove-HD I provided in .

Note that I never tested the function with a RDM disk Smiley Sad

yes that will do but will have to delete the removed RDM from the cloned VM..( Space issue)!!!!!!

I'm not sure if a clone operation will copy a RDM disk.

Where would the copy go ?

Is there anyone who has experience with this ?

The alternative, which doesn't require eventual extra space, is to shutdown the source VM, disconnect the RDM disk, clone the guest and then reconnect the RDM disk on the original guest.

Update: forget this, I just noticed you said hotclone in the title.

I think if the Remove-HD function is employed before the cloning it might just work!!!????

Sorry please ignore if the remove-HD function is used before cloning that will only remove it from the Original VM...

The cloning i think takes a snapshot of the OSand disks and copies the snapshot to a location ..so i dont see how it can be done except

1) hot clone images

2)Use the Remove-HD function to remove and delete the RDM from the clone........
