Did you already try deleting all PowerCLI folders (manually).
And then installing PowerCLI from scratch?

I deleted the files manually from C:\Users\WAdmin\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Modules\ and ran the PowerCLI install using Install-Module from scratch. But It didn't make any difference.

You also seem to have a version under C:\Program Files.
Did you delete those as well?

No I didn't. Is there a powershell one-liner that can delete everything in both folders?

Not really a one-liner, but this should do the trick.

Note that for folders under C:\Program Files you will have to run this from a PS session started As Administrator

Get-Module -Name VMware* -ListAvailable |

where{$_.Author -match 'VMware'} |

ForEach-Object -Process {

    $folder = Split-Path -Path $_.ModuleBase -Parent

    Get-ChildItem -Path $folder -Recurse | Remove-Item -Recurse -Force -Confirm:$false

}

Sorry I must've missed something when I copied from the browser to the notepadd++. Now it worked.

Ran your script that removed everything.

Restarted the server.

Ran the Install-Module -Name VMware.PowerCLI

Tried Connect-VIServer but the error message is the same.

Just to make sure, did you check under Programs and Features if there is still a VMware PowerCLI entry in there?

The only other times I saw that error was when there were multiple versions of PowerCLI installed, and one of those was an old MSI-based installation (6.5 R1 or older)

The folders under Modules do exist but they all are empty

You probably installed under the Scope of CurrentUser, so the actual folders should be under C:\Users\<your-account>\Documents\WindowsPowerShell\Modules

But there shouldn't be empty folders.
Can you remove them manually?

Also, did you check in the Control Panel under Programs and Features, if there is a VMware PowerCLI entry?

As you said, there was an old version of PowerCLI installed. I had to remove it using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

After the server restart, I tried to install PowerCLI but the powershell no longer recognized "Install-Module". $PSVersionTable still shows PSVersion 5.1.14409.1018

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-Module -Name VMware* -ListAvailable

PS C:\Windows\system32>

PS C:\Windows\system32>

PS C:\Windows\system32> Install-Module -Name VMware.PowerCLI -Scope AllUsers -Force -SkipPublisherCheck -AllowClobber -Verbose

Install-Module : The term 'Install-Module' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a

path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

I would try reinstalling PS v5.1, aka Windows Management Framework 5.1

Is the module present?

Get-Module -Name powershellget -ListAvailable

And what do you currently have in

$env:PSModulePath

Just to make sure, can you check manually in C:\Program Files\WindowsPowerShell\Modules that the PowerShellGet module is not there?

If not, you'll have to revert to a manual install of a module.

Do a manual download of the PowerShellGet module (as a nuget package).

Then follow the instructions in the section Installing PowerShell modules from a NuGet package in the Manual Package Download document.

Once the module is in place, you should be able to use Install-Module again.

That folder is still empty

Snag_3ed3129.png

I downloaded the package and followed the procedure as instructed in Manual Package Download - PowerShell | Microsoft Docs and restarted the server.

Still no luck.

There is progress, instead of not found it now says it can't load the module.
What is the PowerShell execution policy?

Get-ExecutionPolicy
