Automated VM migration - space saving...

Guys,

We're slowly running out of datastore space, and I had a thought.  I know there is vMotion for moving VMs between hosts, but has anyone come up with a way to automatically migrate VMs between datastores?

Facts
We have 15 Datastores within a Windows folder.
We have 5 Datastores within a Linux folder

We have 10 Datastores within a Mac folder

Lets say over the 15 Windows datastores there is a total of 200Gb free, however it varies from 3Gb to 20Gb over the 15 Datastores.

Would it be possible to run a script, that could auto-migrate these VMs to 'move' the free space onto 1 Datastore, thus allowing us to add VMs larger than 10/20Gb.

Note:- We would only want to auto-migrate within the same folder.

Now, is this a stupid idea? Or just a very complex one?

Cheers,
Stuart

Well, there is Storage vMotion to live migrate vmdks of VMs across datastores and then there's Storage DRS, which will automate the process, to do load balancing etc.

vSphere with Operations Management: Storage DRS | United States

It's available with Enterprise Plus license

Ahh, but not in 4.1 as far as I can work out.

I was looking for something to mimic that functionality.
