Just vMotion the controller onto another host and move back once the host has been patched. Assuming you have controllers spread across three hosts with anti-affinity rules. No need to shut down just make sure you keep them spread across hosts after patching.

Hi,

if controllers are not running in shared LUN then most probably you will need to shutdown the Controllers to patch ESXi host.
