ospf and BGP _NSX

Hi All ,

could someone suggest on the following scenerio.

consider a scenerio wherein we have three logical switchs (web,app,DB) created and connected to DLR.

DLR is also connected to perimeter edge through transit logical switch .

we have configured ospf ON DLR and on perimeter edge in order to exchange dynamic routes  betwenDLR and perimeter edge .

in what scenrios we need to configure BGP?  do we need to configure BGP between perimeter edge and DLR or it should be between perimeter edge and exteralrouter.??

Hi,

It depends on your physical routing infrastructure. Are you running BGP as the dynamic routing protocol in your physical network it makes sense to run BGP between the Edge and the first physical router. To keep things consistent you should use BGP between the Edge an the DLR too.

If you use OSPF in your physical network, use OSPF al the way down to the DLR.

i was referring this in context to HOL-1803-01-NET.

my understanding was that BGP should always be configured between corporate router to external world as the name suggest border gateway protocal.

however in lab environmet we have used both ospf and BGP at all level be it between perimeter gateway and DLR  or from perimeter gateway to physical router.

Normally single routing protocol may be sufficient for single DC,  BGP could be used in larger designs due to scalability. OSPF uses more CPU than BGP, but has different properties like areas, stub areas etc. External network for Internet uses BGP (due to very large number of routers).

Sometimes due to routing update control or merging 2 different DCs, two routing protocols may need to be used together, this could be NSX-BGP, ExternalNetwork-OSPF or vice versa
